Connecting Instructor Practices & Community College Student Success
Kunkle-Gaiero, Kristina A.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Saint Mary's College of California
This dissertation identified the practices utilized by three exemplary instructors in a Northern California Community College. The case study approach was the method of choice based on the questions that this study sought to answer. The methodology included interviews, focus group sessions, classroom observations and document review. Eight overarching themes were identified: "Teacher Training, Field Success, Group Work, Efficient Methods, Shares Power, Realistic Expectations, Applicability" and "Sets the Tone". It was concluded that student success was significantly influenced by the teaching practices of these instructors. Future studies are needed on how instructors contribute to success in other educational disciplines. Training programs can be developed from this research and tested for effectiveness by measuring outcomes such as the success rate.
