Outcomes and Implications of Designing and Implementing a Project-Based Learning Geometry Unit

This study describes how two 10th grade teachers designed a cross-disciplinary unit, using PBL instruction as a tool for helping students create a valid and convincing argument in their math class. The five week PBL unit focused around American Studies/English and geometry content. In order to measure the rigor and relevance of the unit, multiple data sources were collected: formal and informal teacher interviews, field notes and video recordings of the daily classroom instruction, and student artifacts produced throughout the unit. Analysis of data included employing grounded theory and open coding techniques. The results indicate that designing and implementing a PBL unit is no easy feat. From a design standpoint, the PBL unit in this study lacked the depth required for students to engage in mathematics, specifically mathematical proof and reasoning. From an implementation standpoint, teachers need to carefully craft the Driving Question so it is tightly connected to the standards. Cognitive tools ought to scaffold and enrich students' learning of the content. Also, successful implementation requires practitioners to reflect on their teaching practices frequently and in collaboration with others so that teacher's practical and personal knowledge leads to improved student learning. The significance of the findings concludes with recommendations for practice and implications related to future research. Conversation about a framework that conceptualizes teachers' design and implementation of PBL units in a mathematics classroom is also initiated.
