Enrolled but Underprepared: A Phenomenological Study of Community College Developmental Students
Rizzo, Stephen Wayne Burton
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
This phenomenological study examined the experience of community college developmental students, students who were enrolled in college yet underprepared for the college experience, as described by fourteen community college developmental students. The purpose of the study was to gain a better understanding of the lived experience of the developmental students to determine the essence of the experience of being a community college developmental student, that is, enrolled in a community college yet underprepared for the college experience. Since phenomenology allows a researcher to uncover the underlying essence of a phenomenon, it was the most appropriate approach for this study. Qualitative data was gathered using semi-structured interviews. Transcripts of the interviews were analyzed using phenomenological reduction, resulting in the identification of four primary themes with nine subthemes and one secondary theme. The study concludes with a discussion of the implications of the findings and with recommendations for further research.
