Walking Together: A Narrative/Pastoral Approach to the ACPE Accreditation Site Visit
Oertli, Karrie
ProQuest LLC, D.Min. Dissertation, Drew University
Walking together is a strong theme in religious literature: God companions persons, and persons companion one another. All share and hear stories in that action. The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. (ACPE) began to walk together in 1967, as it gathered four organizations into one. ACPE has grown and changed, becoming world's leading organization for clinical pastoral education (CPE). It is an accredited and accrediting organization, accredited by the U.S. Department of Education and accrediting ACPE CPE centers within the United States. This project undertook a review of one portion of the ACPE accrediting process, the accreditation site visit, to suggest and frame a narrative/pastoral approach of mutuality, relationship, challenge, and Standard compliance. It used the stories of CPE supervisors and ideas of hearing stories in context. Coming from a Christian perspective, this paper considers the challenges and insights gleaned from a new process, the use of paid site team chairs, to further the concept of narrative as affirmation that stories are valid ways to determine compliance with standards. This thesis also engages the challenges of change within institutions. It puts forth the idea that accreditation, or any kind of testing, can be a "both/and" process of hearing narratives, judging narratives, and creating together new narratives, while also meeting standards.
