The Vortex of Homophobic Bullying: The Reporting Behavior of Teachers

This study investigates the population of intermediate and high school teachers in the Hawaii Department of Education. The purpose of the study was to determine the degree to which certain variables impact the reporting of homophobic bullying by secondary teachers. The study examined if the type of bullying, a teacher's characteristics, and perceptions of a victim's characteristics affect the willingness to report bullying. The study also aimed to determine if teacher perceptions of school climate impact the reporting of homophobic bullying by teachers in secondary schools. A survey was conducted and quantitative methods utilized to collect and analyze the data. The analyses showed that statistical differences were evident in regards to several different variables. There were significant findings in relation to perceptions about different types of bullying and teacher characteristics such as grade level taught, age, years of experience, and perceptions about the victim and perpetrator. There was also a significant difference between the awareness of strategies in relation to homophobic bullying. A large percentage of the teachers were unaware of any strategies used to address homophobic bullying. [The dissertation citations contained here are published with the permission of ProQuest LLC.
