The Effect of Tennessee's Prekindergarten Programs on Young Children's School Readiness Skills: A Regression Discontinuity Design
Coburn, Jamie Lynn
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Tennessee Technological University
This study sought to explore the relationship between attendance in public prekindergarten programs and school readiness skills using regression discontinuity methodology. A sample of 179 students entering prekindergarten and 67 students entering kindergarten who had completed prekindergarten the previous year was collected with parental consent to release Brigance Screen scores and eligibility status for free/reduced lunch (indicator of socioeconomic status). A second analysis with ANOVA was conducted with a sample of the same 67 students entering kindergarten who completed prekindergarten and 86 students entering kindergarten who had not participated in prekindergarten. Both the regression discontinuity and ANOVA results indicate a significant impact of prekindergarten participation on school readiness skills. Kindergarten students who were from low socioeconomic status and attended prekindergarten had greater gains in school readiness skills than kindergarten students who were not from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Kindergarten students who were eligible for free/reduced lunch and attended prekindergarten performed better than kindergarten who were eligible for free/reduced lunch and did not attend prekindergarten. A limitation of this study is that the sample of students was drawn from a geographic region where there is little race/ethnicity diversity.
