A Phenomenological Study: Understanding the Management of Social Categorization Diversity Issues Associated with College Athletic Teams

This qualitative phenomenological research study explored the social categorization diversity management experiences of NCAA Division I, II and III athletic coaches. The research study used a combination of questionnaire, observation and coaching interviews to obtain an understanding of the skills, tools and techniques that these coaches used to prevent and manage social categorization diversity issues that occurred within the dynamics of the past or current teams. The purpose of this research was to gain an understanding into the skills, tools and techniques that athletic team coaches used to prevent and manage social categorization and diversity issues on their athletic teams and apply those skills, tools and techniques to the workplace teams that exist within the average Fortune 500 work environment. As a result of this research, the following conclusions were reached: (a) coaches preferred addressing these issues using a privacy based, one on one problem resolution methodology, (b) honest, direct forms of communication are a key skill set for resolving social categorization diversity issues, (c) the establishment of a team mission or objective statement is a key tool for preventing and managing social categorization diversity issues that may occur. These conclusions are generalizable and appropriate for application by the human resource practitioners, organizational leaders and work team leaders within the average Fortune 500 workplace team environment.
