Developing and Retaining Effective Mathematics Teachers in Seattle's South End High Schools
de la Fuente, Anna-Maria
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Washington
Recent attention to low student achievement in mathematics has brought attention at the national, state, and local level to the shortage of "Highly Qualified" mathematics teachers. However, current policy and practice fall short of ensuring that the most qualified--as in effective--mathematics teachers support the learning of the students with the highest needs. This capstone project uses student and staff voices from two urban high schools to identify the characteristics and skills of an effective high school mathematics teacher, examine how an existing summer program for ninth graders could develop those characteristics and skills, and determine what other supports are needed to develop and retain the most effective mathematics teachers where they are most needed. The final chapter explores potential short and long-term leadership actions necessary to sustain and expand work towards this goal.
