"We Can Be Leaders if We Want to": A Case Study of Second Grade Leadership Education
Vendetti, Dina Carol
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilmington University (Delaware)
This study utilizes qualitative research in examining second graders' perceptions of what it means to be a leader. Further, this study explores the capacity of second grade students to serve as leaders in a school wide service project. To this end, the students were involved in a leadership education course created by the researcher and were given the assignment of "leadership" in a service project. Data sources included interviews, observations, field notes, journal entries, and questionnaires. The researcher determined through this study that second graders' perceptions of leadership are still in the formative stages. It was also learned that this group of second graders was able to function as a leadership team and was successful in leading the rest of the school in a service project.
