A Study of the Association between High School Student Participation in Co-Curricular Activities and Academic Achievement
Streb, Arthur G.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Missouri - Saint Louis
The purpose of this study was to take a look at the academic achievement of students who are involved in co-curricular when statistically compared to the performance of their peers who are not involved in co-curricular activities. The scope of the investigation only includes high school students and the relationship between their involvement in activities and their academic performance. In addition, it does differentiate between the types of co-curricular activities a student is involved in, be it sports or performing groups, or even after-school clubs. Although there are many instruments used to measure student achievement, this study relied on two commonly utilized and universally accepted methods; ACT scores and Grade Point Averages. Much of the research into co-curricular activity participation by High School students suggests that such pursuits have a positive correlation with improved academic achievement. The research conducted in this study supports previous studies which showed that participation in co-curricular activities had a positive association with students' academic achievement. In this study, 492 graduating seniors were surveyed regarding their four year participation in after-school programs. Academic success measure of ACT scores and GPA were used in the data analysis of these students. This archival data was entered into SPSS 15.0 for windows and a descriptive statistics analysis was applied.
