This book explores the efficacy of innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to educational leadership preparation implemented at universities across the United States that serve K-12 populations in urban, rural, and suburban contexts. This collection of chapters draws from seminal and contemporary literature on preparation programs, the Carnegie Project for Education Doctorate. It demonstrates how theory and research play a pivotal role in the creation of new doctoral programs in educational leadership. The book focuses on trends, issues, challenges, and possibilities that weave commonalities and differentiate structures among seven professional doctorate programs in educational leadership (Ed.D.). This book contains three parts. Part I, "Historical Overview, Identity Politics of Educational Leadership, and Online Graduate Education", contains: (1) Historical context of graduate programs in educational leadership (Anthony H. Normore); (2) Clashing epistemologies: Reflection on change, culture and the politics of the professoriate (Christa Boske and Autumn Tooms); and (3) Online graduate programs in educational leadership preparation: Pros and cons (Jeffrey S. Brooks). Part II, "Innovative and Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Ed.D.", contains: (4) Renewing the Ed.D.: A university K-12 partnership to prepare school leaders (Gaetane Jean-Marie, Curt Adams, and Gregg Garn); (5) Critical friends: Supporting a small, private university face the challenges of crafting an innovative scholar-practitioner doctorate (Valerie Storey and Patrick Hartwick); and (6) An interdisciplinary doctoral program in educational leadership (Ed.D.): Addressing the needs of diverse learners in urban settings (Anthony H. Normore and Julie Slayton). Part III, "Professional Practice of Research for the Scholar Practitioner", contains: (7) From curricular alignment to the culminating project: The Peabody College Ed.D. Capstone (Claire Smrekar and Kristin McGraner); (8) An Ed.D. program based on principles of how adults learn best (Barry G. Sheckley, Morgaen L. Donaldson, Anysia P. Mayer, and Richard W. Lemons); (9) Examining the capstone experience in a cutting edge Ed.D. program (David D. Marsh, Myron Dembo, Karen S. Gallagher, and Kathy Stowe); and (10) Epilogue (Edith Rusch). This book also contains Foreword by Bruce G. Barnett and Introduction: A leadership imperative: Crossing boundaries in leadership preparation programs by Gaetane Jean-Marie.
