EIL in an Actual Lesson
Coskun, Abdullah
Online Submission, English as an International Language Journal v5 p74-80 Mar 2010
The English as an International Language (EIL) research movement that has appeared due to the increasing number of non-native speakers outnumbering the native English speakers seems to challenge some of the traditional assumptions in ELT. Within the scope of ELT curriculum development, this study aims to argue against two of the traditional assumptions that the goal of English learning is native speaker competence and that native speaker culture should inform instructional materials. By illustrating a lesson plan in which students are familiarized with English speakers from various backgrounds and cultures, the study tries to show how an EIL lesson looks.
