Understanding FE Mergers. Research Report
Calvert, Natasha
Learning and Skills Network (NJ3)
This report presents research findings and discussion to help develop an understanding of what gives rise to mergers and, when they do happen, what makes them work. The research has focused on merger activity between further education (FE) colleges since incorporation in 1993. Mergers are highly contextual, and part of ensuring success is responding to specific dynamics. However, some common themes of good practice emerge in relation to the implementation phase. For instance, effective planning and consistent communication appear key to all mergers, as well as a full appreciation of the time and resources required. In addition, findings suggest that it can be important to convey a message and feeling of parity through all processes and protocols if the merger is of "equal partners." A number of "critical success factors" are set out in the conclusions. (Contains 11 footnotes.)
