The Elephant in the Room: My Battle for Tenure
Woo, Kimberley A.
Loo and Chun (2002) maintain, "Asian Americans have been taught to believe that academic achievement is the ticket to success...If you work hard, you will be duly rewarded" (pp. 96-97). This paper invites readers to consider two questions: (1) What are we to make of inconsistencies between institutional commitments "to diversity, educational equity, and social justice" and individuals' experiences of inequity? (2) If Asian Americans scholars adhere to Loo and Chun's formula for success yet also challenge an institutional status quo, will they be successful within the academy?
