Arts Participation 2008: Highlights from a National Survey
National Endowment for the Arts
This report presents the key findings from the National Endowment for the Art's Survey of Public Participation in the Arts. The survey was conducted in May 2008, and it asked a large, nationally representative sample of adults (18 and above) about their participation in arts events and activities over the previous 12 months. Among the findings: (1) There are persistent patterns of decline in participation for most art forms; (2) Long-term trends suggest fundamental shifts in the relationship between age and arts attendance; (3) Educated Americans are participating less than before, and educated audiences are the most likely to attend or participate in the arts; and (4) The Internet and mass media are reaching substantial audiences for the arts.
