Immediate and Delayed Transitions from Secondary School Graduation to Public Post-Secondary Education in BC
British Columbia Ministry of Education
In the spring of 2005, the Ministry of Advanced Education on behalf of the 22 Central Data Warehouse (CDW) participating institutions, the Ministry of Education, and the BC Universities signed an agreement to establish a formal mechanism that protects individual privacy while enabling the exchange of personal information between the parties for the purpose of investigating student transitions, mobility, and outcomes from the Kindergarten-Grade 12 (K-12) education system to the public post-secondary system. This report summarizes the findings of the second research project undertaken by the Student Transitions Project. The main research question of Student Transitions Project Research Project #2 involved immediate and delayed transition into BC public post-secondary institutions. Expanding on Research Project #1, the primary question being investigated was "What is the nature and distribution of the transition of students from the K-12 education system into and among BC public postsecondary institutions over a multi-year period?" The primary research question was investigated by examining the following sub-questions: (1) What were the demographic characteristics of the transitioning and non-transitioning graduates?; (2) How many BC students make a transition to the BC public post-secondary system after they graduate?; (3) Where are these students from?; (4) Where did these students attend?; (5) What is the academic GPA of these students?; and (6) What fields of study do these students enter into? (Contains 19 tables and 6 figures. Notes are included by individual table.) [Prepared by Ministry of Education, Information Department, for the Student Transitions Project, a collaborative project between the Ministries of Education and Advanced Education, and British Columbia's public post-secondary education institutions.]
