Reaching Out to Families and The Community: How Some High-Performing Schools Are Engaging Families and Citizens to Support Student Achievement. Issue Brief

Strong relationships with adults who provide support are essential to the healthy development of children. Principals and staff in successful schools have found that respecting and addressing the needs and preferences of families and community members can be instrumental in forming lasting relationships. Through strong partnerships, successful schools are demonstrating the positive impact that family and community involvement can have on student achievement. This Issue Brief highlights the ways in which selected high-performing schools incorporate parent and community involvement in their efforts to increase student achievement in schools where: (1) A significant population of children are living in poverty and/or are children of color; (2) Proficiency rates are above 80 percent, or on a very rapid improvement trajectory; (3) Student achievement are relatively small in comparison with achievement gaps statewide; (4) Two years' worth of comparable data are available; (5) Graduation rate is high and a high proportion of freshmen became seniors four years later; (6) Adequate yearly progress is met; and (7) Enrollment is open to all neighborhood children.
