The Community Agenda for America's Public Schools
Coalition for Community Schools
The challenges our nation faces in educating all of our young people are alarming. Yet in seeking solutions we often find ourselves divided. Public schools are too fundamental to our democratic values to leave isolated from other community institutions. This disconnect does not serve our children well. When addressing public education, we must act collectively. This publication sets forth a proposed "Community Agenda for America's Public Schools," built on four core beliefs: (1) Communities and schools are fundamentally and positively interconnected; (2) Schools can make a difference in the lives of all children; (3) Children do better when their families do better; and (4) The development of the whole child is a critical factor for student success. At the heart of "The Community Agenda" is a commitment to work together to create strong and purposeful partnerships for change and results. Policy recommendations fall into seven areas: Results-Focused Partnerships; Youth, Parent, School, and Community Involvement; Community-School Coordination; A Broad-Based Accountability Framework; Public Access to Data; Professional Development and Capacity-Building; and Increased Investments. Included herein is a list of organizational endorsements.
