This issue of ETS Policy Notes highlights the ETS Symposium on Latino Achievement in the Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), held by ETS, the College Board, and the Hispanic Research Center at Arizona State University in Princeton, NJ, November 20-22, 2005. The conference had three major goals: (1) Exploring the challenges, practices, policies, research, and advocacy at the national, state, and institutional levels required for improving preparation of Latino students for access to college, enhancing the achievement, retention, and persistence of Latino college students, and improving preparation of Latino students for graduate and professional school science STEM programs; (2) Creating a vision for comprehensive programs of research and policy initiatives to increase the number of Latino students pursuing STEM careers; and (3) Strengthening the partnership of the College Board, ETS, and the Hispanic Research Center of Arizona State University in focusing on expanding the success of Latino students. Subjects included in this brief include: (1) The Problematic Pipeline; (2) Strengthening the Pipeline; (3) Developing an Assessment "of" and "for" Learning; and (4) Expanding and Cultivating the Hispanic Doctoral Workforce.
