Variables Control Charts: A Measurement Tool to Detect Process Problems within Housing
Luna, Andrew
Online Submission, Journal of College and University Student Housing v28 n1 p49-55 1999
The purpose of this study was to use quality improvement tools to determine if the current process of supplying hot water to a high-rise residence hall for women at a southeastern Doctoral I granting institution was in control. After a series of focus groups among the residents in the hall, it was determined that they were mostly concerned about the consistency and availability of hot water in the building. Three floors were predetermined so that the building was separated into lower, middle, and upper floors. The temperature of hot water was taken during the morning, afternoon, and evening for each floor during a two week period and the data were plotted using means and range control charts. The results indicated that the hot water system was out of control and patterns existed whereby improvement to the process could be implemented. (Contains 3 figures.)
