Shaped by the Standards. Geographic Literacy through Children's Literature
Rogers, Linda K.
Teacher Ideas Press
Using the format of the original "Through Children's Literature" series of titles, the author expands the original series focus by discussing how instruction today and the use of integrated children's literature is "Shaped by the Standards." Arranged around the national standards strands in Geography, this title includes an introduction that explains the strands and the standards and includes 2-4 lesson plans for each strand. The author identifies and explains the performance expectations and provides literature text sets for each strand. Graphic organizers and other supporting materials are included within the chapters. This book uses the Six Essential Elements to organize the chapters. These chapters are: (1) The World in Spatial Terms; (2) Places and Regions; (3) Physical Systems; (4) Human Systems; (5) Environment and Society; and (6) The Uses of Geography. Within each chapter is a brief discussion of the standards, with reference to the themes, organized under the essential element. Following the standards' benchmarks, the focus of this book is grades K-4. Sample lesson plans in each chapter provide models for instruction, offering ideas that can be used at several levels. The standards listed at the beginning of each chapter reflect what the students should know and understand at the end of the fourth grade. The book includes an annotated bibliography of over 200 books organized in three sections by Children's Literature; Classroom Reference, or Informational Books; and Teacher Resources. (Contains 21 figures.)
