This overview of the development of the university, college and institute sector in British Columbia, Canada focuses on the public sector but makes passing reference to the few private institutions that provide academic education. Some contextual information about the role of government and agencies is provided, along with a listing of key reports. The Macdonald Report of 1962 introduced fifteen years of rapid expansion and development, including the instant establishment of two universities and the gradual formation of community colleges in all regions of the province. Beginning in 1990, the introduction of the university college concept complicated institutional mandates, culminating in all colleges being authorized to offer baccalaureate degrees in applied fields. Intended as a readable introduction, this report synthesizes and summarizes information from a variety of disparate sources. Some details require local knowledge of the province, but the broad themes should be readily comprehensible to all audiences. Brief histories of each individual institution appear in the appendix. (Contains 3 figures and 1 table.)
