As the number of English language learners in mainstream classrooms increases, all educators will need a basic understanding of second language acquisition as well as a working knowledge of instructional strategies that are particularly effective for these students. This issue of "Focus On" discusses second language acquisition and ways to support the language development of English language learners. It also reviews various instructional techniques that mainstream teachers can use to support the literacy and content learning of English language learners in their classrooms.
