Getting Organised: The Role of Data Organisation in Students' Representation of Numerical Data
Nisbet, Steven
International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, Paper presented at the 27th International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education Conference Held Jointly with the 25th PME-NA Conference (Honolulu, HI, Jul 13-18, 2003), v3 p389-396
This paper explores the role of organising data in representing numerical data in an organised way--a skill which does not come naturally to most students. Grade 6 children were given a series of lessons on organising data and then representing the data graphically. It was found that after instruction, more students were able to reorganise the data and produce an organised graph. (Contains 8 figures.) [For complete proceedings, see ED500858.]
