Education and Training that Meets the Needs of Small Business: A Systematic Review of Research
Dawe, Susan; Nguyen, Nhi
National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER)
Small businesses account for the great majority of businesses and half the private sector employment in Australia, but only one third provide structured training for their employees. This study, a systematic review of existing research, set out to find clear evidence of intervention strategies that meet small business needs in relation to the provision of information, skills and knowledge in the training arena. The review shows that strategies which match the way small business learns are more successful than direct or formal training. Small business learns "through doing," with the focus on real issues in the workplace and learning through social networks. This study will be of particular interest to policymakers with an interest in small business, training providers and other business service organizations interested in supporting small business. While research always leaves some questions unanswered, this review provides clear directions on what works for small business. The following are appended: (1) Acknowledgements; (2) Framework for systematic review--small business; (3) How included studies meet selection criteria; and (4) List of findings. (Contains 15 tables and 2 figures.) [This work has been produced with funding provided through the Australian Department of Education, Science and Training. The author/project team undertook this research with funding under a new component of the National Vocational Education and Training Research and Evaluation (NVETRE) Program from 2004 called "systematic reviews".
