The Status of the Teaching Profession, 2007
Center for the Future of Teaching and Learning
The "Teaching and California's Future" initiative was created a decade ago to strengthen the teaching profession in California. This brief summary is based on the latest research for the initiative, covered in depth in the full report for 2007. The authors argue that California policymakers need to expand their focus from the quantity of teachers to the quality of teaching, building a system that produces and supports the kind of quality teaching necessary to prepare students to succeed in an economy based on knowledge and skills. Includes six fact sheets to illuminate the state's teaching force and the changes necessary to improve it: (1) What's Considered "Most Important" in Hiring Teachers?; (2) Student Achievement: The Search for Proficiency; (3) Underprepared Teachers: The Number Continues to Decline; (4) Distribution Still Unfair: Least Prepared Teachers Face Neediest Students; (5) Warning Signs: Retirements Looming and Teacher Production Down; and (6) Teaching Quality: California's Reality. (Contains 10 figures.) [This report was produced in part by the Office of the Chancellor of California State University and The Office of the President of the University of California.
