Raising Our Voices for Children. Association for Children of New Jersey Annual Report, 2006
Association for Children of New Jersey
Through research and policy advocacy, the Association for Children of New Jersey (ACNJ) works to change state policies and improve programs for children, and advocates to bring together many more voices on behalf of children. The annual report reviews 2006 accomplishments, including: (1) More state funding for preschool ensure that more children have access to high-quality programs; (2) Additional state and federal funding to enroll 5,000 more children in the child health insurance program; (3) Additional state funding supported child welfare reform and established a new Department of Children and Families; (4) 1,400 children in foster care found permanent families through adoption; (5) 5,000 people signed on to ACNJ's e-advocacy network; (6) Children sent letters to the governor through ACNJ's essay contest telling him what he should do for children: (7) Copies of "I Can Make It" were given to Law Guardians to distribute to children entering foster care; (8) ACNJ-commissioned poll responses on attitudes toward school funding; (9) ACNJ assistance to access special education services; and (10) ACNJ publications, forums, trainings and e-mails. In spite of progress, the annual report concludes that despite the state's comparative wealth, many New Jersey children still grow up in poverty, and live in communities that are dangerous and unsafe. Advocacy is needed to close this gap and to ensure that all children have what they need to become healthy, responsible, productive adults, able to reach their full potential.
