Youth Volunteering in the States: 2002 to 2006. Fact Sheet
Helms, Sara E.; Marcelo, Karlo Barrios
Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE)
Volunteer rates vary tremendously across states and age groups. In recent years, young people have exhibited rising volunteering rates, particularly high school students and college freshmen, but 2006 witnessed a drop in the volunteering rate among. When comparing the volunteer rates for different age groups from 2002 to 2006, 16-18 year olds volunteer at consistently higher rates than their college-age peers, as found in previous literature. This fact sheet presents volunteer rates by state and age groups calculated using the Current Population Survey (CPS). The large size of the CPS allows a state-by-state comparison for different age groups. (Contains 13 endnotes, 1 figure, and 6 tables.)
