Focusing on Achievement in the Pittsburgh Public Schools: Report of the Strategic Support Team of the Council of the Great City Schools
Council of the Great City Schools
The Pittsburgh Public School district is one of many urban school systems across the country that is struggling to boost student performance and regain the respect of its community. Achievement gaps are wide; student achievement is low; and public confidence is fragile. To begin addressing these issues, the Council of the Great City Schools reviewed the curriculum of the Pittsburgh Public Schools and proposed a list of recommendations to accelerate the student achievement in language arts and mathematics. This report summarizes the Council's findings and proposals made to the Pittsburgh Public Schools following its visit to the district on November 27-30, 2005. (Contains 12 tables and 6 graphs. Appended are: (1) Benchmarking Pittsburgh Against Fast-Improving School Districts; (2) Individuals Interviewed; (3) Documents Reviewed; (4) Biographical Sketches of Members of the Strategic Support Team; and (5) About the Organizations.)
