Preventing Child Abuse and Neglect: Parent-Provider Partnerships in Child Care
Seibel, Nancy; Britt, Donna; Gillespie, Linda Groves; Parlakian, Rebecca
This book is an innovative approach to the primary prevention of child maltreatment. It focuses on the impact that child care providers can make in helping to reduce the risk of abuse and neglect in families with very young children. This research- and practice-based curriculum offers concepts, information, strategies, and practices focused on helping child care providers recognize the importance of their everyday interactions with parents. Developed by ZERO TO THREE for use by trainers of child care professionals, ten independent 6-hour units cover these topics: building collaborative relationships with families; building a healthy brain; social-emotional development of infants, toddlers, and their families; helping parents and providers understand temperament; the influence of culture on caregiving; understanding and responding to abuse and neglect of infants and toddlers; supportive responses to troubled parent-child interactions; challenging behaviors in infants and toddlers; relationship-based and reflective organizations; and supporting staff in their work with parents. Each unit includes printed lecture notes, classroom activities, and background materials, plus handouts, Microsoft PowerPointTM slides, and video vignettes on CD-ROM.
