Post-16 Citizenship: A Guide for Leaders and Coordinators
Fiehn, Julia
Learning and Skills Network (NJ1)
Provision of citizenship education in post-16 education and training organisations can provide enormous benefits for the learner, for the organisation and for society as a whole. However, all commentators agree that leaders and citizenship coordinators in education and training organisations have the greatest impact upon the effectiveness of that provision. In particular, the support of senior managers has been shown to be crucial for the success of citizenship. This guide examines the benefits that citizenship can bring and the ways in which leaders and coordinators can ensure that these benefits are embedded in the whole ethos of the organisation. It also examines how citizenship education can provide a vehicle and a context for many current educational initiatives for 14-19 year-olds. The final section consists of extracts from policy documents which make implicit or explicit reference to the role that citizenship provision can play in addressing current concerns. These documents raise important issues for educational leaders and managers. A list of of resources is also included. (Contains 13 footnotes.) [This document is part of a series of support materials produced by the Post-16 Citizenship Support Programme. The programme is funded by the Quality Improvement Agency (QIA) and delivered by the Learning and Skills Network (LSN).]
