K-8 Charter Schools: Closing the Achievement Gap. Innovations in Education
US Department of Education
This guide is part of a series produced by the U.S. Department of Education, and it builds on two previous works: "Successful Charter Schools" (ED493615) and "Charter High Schools Closing the Achievement Gap" (ED494482). It profiles seven K-8 charter schools that are making headway in narrowing gaps in achievement. It examines factors contributing to these charter schools' hard-earned successes, highlighting practices that may inspire and inform other school communities as they strive to help all students meet high academic standards. For underserved children, these charter schools offer hope. Schools featured in the guide are the Alain Locke Charter Academy (Chicago, Illinois); Amigos Por Vida--Friends For Life Charter School (Houston, Texas); Amistad Academy (New Haven, Connecticut); Carl C. Icahn Charter School (Bronx, New York); Cesar Chavez Academy (Pueblo, Colorado); The Intergenerational School (Cleveland, Ohio); and Pan-American Elementary Charter School (Phoenix, Arizona). The research approach used to develop this guide is a combination of case study methodology and benchmarking of "best practices." Appendices include the research methodology; and a list of resources. (Contains 25 notes, 19 figures, and 3 tables.) [This report was prepared for the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Innovation and Improvement.]
