ERCMExpress. Volume 3, Issue 3
Paine, Cathy
US Department of Education
The Emergency Response and Crisis Management (ERCM) Technical Assistance Center's newsletter, "ERCMExpress," provides comprehensive information on key issues in school emergency management. Memorials are deeply rooted in our culture and remind us of a person who has died or an event in which people died, and they provide a place for people to express emotions and be supported by the school community. Schools should consider carefully the decision to create permanent, physical memorials to deceased students or staff members. This issue of "ERCMExpress," entitled "Paying Tribute to Deceased School Community Members," suggests considerations for erecting permanent school memorials, especially in terms of retraumatization; design; maintenance resources; memorial policy; students, families, and community input; cultural norms; time commitment; location; and long-term implications. It also suggests memorial activities as alternatives to permanent monuments. A list of resources is included.
