Evidence-Based School Counseling: Making a Difference With Data-Driven Practices

Today's school counselors are under increasing pressure to document their effectiveness by using data and producing quantitative accountability reports. This guide from recognized counselor educators and trainers gives preservice and inservice school counselors the tools to identify evidence-based practices in their field and to use data in designing, implementing, and evaluating programs and interventions. The book provides a practical process for using evidence to determine three critical issues: (1) What needs to be done; (2) Which interventions should be implemented and (3) Whether or not the interventions are effective. Aligned with the American School Counselor Association's National Model, this resource offers counselors skill-building guidelines for: (1) Selecting, collecting, and analyzing data for informed planning; (2) Carrying out action research and building collaborative partnerships; (3) Measuring student learning and behavior change; and (4) Communicating results to stakeholders. As counselors successfully incorporate data-based decision making and program planning into their work, they will witness positive academic and personal changes in the lives of their students. Following a preface, acknowledgments and author information, the book is divided into 9 chapters: (1) Moving to Evidence-Based School Counseling Practice; (2) Data-Based Decision Making: Knowing What Needs to Be Addressed; (3) Practical Considerations in Using Data; (4) Choosing Interventions: Reading and Weighing Outcome Research; (5) Evaluating School Counseling Interventions and Programs; (6) Action Research and Collaborative Partnerships; (7) Measuring Student Learning and Behavior Change; (8) Using Surveys to Gather Information and (9) Moving to Evidence-Based School Counseling Practice. Two appendices are included: (1) Appendix A: Guidance Curriculum Action Plans, Intentional Guidance Action Plans, and a Needs Assessment Survey and (2) Appendix B: Summary of School Counseling Outcome Research Articles and Findings. References and an index are included.
