While it may seem unusual that a person firmly established in a career would choose to take on the challenges of teaching adolescents, when we look at the definitions of middle age and the reasons some people make a career change, we realize that middle school can be a great place for middle-aged mid-career changers. They are returning to the "wonder years" to get a fresh start in a new, exciting profession. This article presents reasons why some mid-career changers choose teaching and the various paths from which older pre-service teachers arrive in the classroom (e.g., alternative teaching programs). Ways that experienced teachers can mentor pre-service career switchers are explored. Advice is also given to career changers from the Clemson University Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program participants.
