The Community Gives Back
Schwartz, Daniel
National Middle School Association (NJ3), Middle Ground v10 n3 p40-41 Feb 2007
In this article, the author, a school principal in a small Chicago suburb, shares the story of the local PTA's response to a personal dilemma. When he discovered that he would have to miss his daughter's eighth-grade graduation to attend that of the eighth graders at the school he administrates, the school's PTA arranged to reschedule its graduation so that he would not have to make such a difficult decision. This experience has helped him understand the importance of nurturing communities of caring and reflective action, and to appreciate the value of stories like his, which affirm the power of community, trust, and democracy in schools.
