Making a Personal Connection with Young Adolescents
Polochanin, David
National Middle School Association (NJ3), Middle Ground v10 n4 p40-41 Apr 2007
Some teachers feel that spending any class time on topics other than the subject at hand is a waste--but in this article, the author argues that it is important for teachers to share of themselves and make personal connections with their students, particularly in middle school. Teachers who share personal vignettes and make use of "teachable moments" throughout the year are rewarded with rich discussions, fewer behavioral problems, and increased student effort. These connections result in a better understanding of students' varying instructional and emotional needs, and help teachers use the interactive instructional techniques that are most likely to resonate with them.
