Terror into Triumph: Discipline in the Middle Grades Classroom

Discipline is an integral part of the teaching profession, but there is little preparation for it in teaching programs. In this article, the author describes how she maintains effective discipline in a formerly unruly classroom by creating lessons that engage students and allow them to move around, praising students' efforts as often as possible, discussing appropriate ways of dealing with and expressing feelings, and spending one-one on one time with disruptive students every day. These strategies give her students a sense of belonging, competence, power, and fun, and learning to meet some of their needs has helped her to become a better teacher.
