The Essential Rule: Do the Right Thing
Corum, Brad
National Middle School Association (NJ3), Middle Ground, v8 n2 p24 Oct 2004
Students can avoid poor choices if educators teach them to stop and ask themselves, "Is this the right thing to do?" To be effective, schools must create a climate of high expectations, not only in terms of academic performance, but also to elevate the levels of students' decision-making processes. Educators can do this through coaching, modeling, role playing, and emphasizing the importance of thought-analyzed decisions. Getting students to take responsibility for their decisions based on the needs of others can lay the foundation for better students, better citizens, and a better society. Educators need to strive to develop students who will create a society where doing the right thing is always the right thing to do.
