This book describes how ESOL tests and test users have changed greatly in the past few decades. Some widely used ESOL tests have been revised, with a number of new tests incorporating advances in computer technology. In addition, many more ESOL practitioners than in the past are responsible for selecting and using tests. The authors introduce teachers and administrators to the principles, methods, and vocabulary of language assessment. Twenty-one reviewers of ESOL tests consider test purpose, methods, and justification of their use in particular situations. The book's sequence approximates how teachers and administrators might select and evaluate a standardized test. After the Preface, this book contains the following chapters: (1) Understanding Language Tests and Testing Practices; (2) Locating English Language Tests and Test Reviews; (3) Using the Test Manual to Learn More About a Test; (4) Evaluating the Usefulness of Tests; and (5) Deciding to Develop a Test.
