A Glimpse at the Future of Private Colleges
Dehme, George
Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Trusteeship v13 n2 Mar-Apr 2005
What does research tell about how private colleges can thrive in the future? What has changed in recent years to make it easier or more difficult for small colleges to attract students? What trends or insights can aid private colleges? This article provides a snapshot of the needs and desires of the college-bound student, as well as a longitudinal baseline. Some of the baseline questions are particularly valuable to private colleges. The issues covered in this summary are: (1) reasons for picking a private institution; (2) choice of major; (3) flexibility and supportiveness; (4) fading liberal arts; and (5) preserving the private edge. (Contains 2 tables.)
