Invest in Your Public-Trust Portfolio
Griswold, John S., Jr.
Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Trusteeship v13 n1 Jan-Feb 2005
Recently, colleges and universities have come face to face with the fact that the nonprofit world is engulfed in turmoil and dealing with a decline in public trust. Both the government and the public have soured toward nonprofits, and higher education is not exempt from this crisis of confidence. This article suggests that colleges and universities work to strengthen public trust before it starts to decline too precipitously, and offers two strategies--adapting guidelines from the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and practicing active governance--that may help post-secondary institutions avoid some of the misfortunes faced by other nonprofits.
