Six Types of Teachers: Recruiting, Retaining and Mentoring the Best
Fiore, Douglas J.; Whitaker, Todd
Eye on Education
This book helps principals and all others who hire and retain teachers to sharpen their ability to hire better teachers for their schools, improve the ones who are already there, and keep their best and brightest on board. It demonstrates that the quality of the people on staff will ultimately determine the quality of the school and the success of its students. This book is organized around a framework to help one identify quality teachers. Among the six types of teachers revealed are the WOWs (the ones who walk on water), the Solids (dependable, hardworking contributors to the good of the school), the ones who are "not bad" but Replaceable--and three other types of teachers. This book can help evaluate current staff members, hire new ones, and make better decisions about building for the future. Four sections comprise this book. Section 1, The Key Word Is Quality, contains chapters: (1) Who Moved My Teacher?; and (2) Six Types of Teachers. Section 2, Why Teachers Leave, continues with: (3) From the Mouths of Teachers; (4) Creating, Fostering, and Sustaining Quality; and (5) Keeping the Great Ones Motivated. The third section, Adding Quality, presents the next chapters: (6) Finding and Choosing the Best; and (7) Inducting New Teachers. The final section, The Impact of Other Stakeholders, concludes with: (8) Supporting Teachers in Parent Interactions; (9) Purposeful Mentoring; and (10) Teaching: The Noblest Profession.
