Supervision for Learning: A Performance-Based Approach to Teacher Development and School Improvement
Aseltine, James M.; Faryniarz, Judith O.; Rigazio-DiGilio, Anthony J.
Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development
While traditional ways of supervising and evaluating teachers focus on their inputs--their lesson plans and instruction--what really matters most are the outputs: how students perform. So here is a book that helps school leaders transform their supervisory systems into performance-based models that connects to student achievement and teacher professional development. Beginning with analyzing student learning data, the authors guide school leaders through a process that gets supervisor and teacher focusing on the academic growth of individual students. Available on an accompanying Web site are case studies from real schools that show how this model yields great results, such as: (1) Improved student achievement; (2) Increased capacity for teachers to make instructional interventions based on student learning data; and (3) Stronger connections between teacher professional development and school improvement. Following a foreword and an introduction, this book is organized into the following chapters: (1) Reconceptualizing Supervision and Evaluation; (2) Getting Ready to Target Improvement; (3) Working Together to Initiate Teacher Development; (4) Creating Individual Professional Development Plans; (5) Differentiating Performance-Based Supervision and Evaluation; (6) Managing Performance-Based Supervision and Evaluation; (7) Pursuing Teacher Learning to Inform Instructional Interventions; (8) Evaluating Teacher Growth and Development; (9) Developing Culture and Capacity in the Learning Community; and (10) Applying the Model to Administrators. The following are appended: (1) The Criteria of Excellence; and (2) Sample Artifacts. Also included are: (1) Portraits of PBSE Success: Three Case Studies (online only); (2) References and Resources; (3) Epilogue; (4) About the Authors; (5) Related ASCD Resources: Supervision for Learning; and (5) An ASCD Study Guide for Supervision for Learning: A Performance-Based Approach to Teacher Development and School Improvement.
