Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL)
Given the current emphasis on providing evidence of increased student achievement, many afterschool programs are expanding their focus to include support for students' academic growth. One of the tools the National Partnership, of which the Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) is a part, has been charged by the Department of Education with developing is an online Afterschool Training Toolkit. The Toolkit provides afterschool practitioners with a wealth of guidance for integrating literacy, mathematics, science, the arts, homework help, and technology into their programs. This review of supporting literature pertains specifically to the mathematics portion of the Toolkit, and is provided as an additional resource to provide a more in-depth review of the literature used to support the mathematics practices and guidance provided in the Toolkit. This document first outlines the research supporting each of the key ideas cross-cutting the mathematics practices in the Toolkit. Following the discussion of key ideas, readers will find a short overview and annotated bibliography of the research and literature supporting each of the mathematics practices.
