Brock, Cynthia H.; Raphael, Taffy E.
International Reading Association (NJ3)
Changing demographics makes the nation's schools increasingly diverse, both culturally and linguistically. In this contribution to the Kids InSight series, the reader will gain an insider's perspective on what it means to be an English learner in a U.S. classroom. By reflecting on one's own work with language learners, one will develop a deeper understanding of how to support them in the classroom. Discover the power of listening to and learning from all students as the authors describe: (1) Culture and its role in literacy learning; (2) Processes of new language acquisition; (3) Effective instructional contexts for English learners; and (4) Suggestions for using literature in the classroom. Additional resources include reflection points, classroom vignettes, and suggested readings. The book is divided into the following six chapters: (1) Setting the Context: Working with Deng; (2) Developing a Knowledge Base about Language and Culture; (3) Whole-Group Instruction: Unique Challenges for English-Language Learners; (4) Small-Group Instruction: Applications to Deng's Learning; (5) Evaluating and Reflecting on Deng's Learning; and (6) Book Club Plus: An Alternative Framework for Working with English-Language Learners. Also included are a list of references; and an index.
