Ethical Research with Children
Open University Press
Research with children is occurring within a climate of mounting international interest in listening to and consulting with children in ways that are respectful of them as competent informants of their own experience. This interest has occurred within "new times" of heightened accountability, regulation and surveillance of research. This climate of increased control means that researchers and research gatekeepers are being required to reconsider their approaches to ethics in research with children. Written by international experts in the fields of early childhood research and ethics, this book will upskill researchers by dealing with these issues of doing ethical research with children and those around them. This book is organized into the following 14 chapters: (1) Ethics and Research with Children (Ann Farrell); (2) Research Ethics in a Culture of Risk (Gary Allen); (3) Designing Ethical Research with Children (Priscilla Alderson); (4) Ethical Research with Very Young Children (Lesley Abbott and Ann Langston); (5) Opening the Research Conversation (Susan Danby and Ann Farrell); (6) Researching Sensitive Issues (Kerryann Walsh); (7) Restorative Research Partnerships in Indigenous Communities (Jessica Ball); (8) Ethical Inclusion of Children with Disabilities in Research (Monica Cuskelly); (9) Transforming Research Ethics: Choices and Challenges of Researching with Children (Glenda MacNaughton and Kylie Smith); (10) Ethical Aspects of Power in Research with Children (Tricia David, Jo Tonkin, Sacha Powell and Ceris Anderson); (11) Researching Communities: Towards Beneficence (Collette Tayler, Ann Farrell, Lee Tennent and Carla Patterson); (12) Ethical Issues in Collaborative Research with Children (Virginia Morrow); (13) New Times in Ethical Research with Children (Ann Farrell); and (14) New Possibilities for Ethical Research with Children (Ann Farrell).
