Trends and Recent Estimates: Sexual Activity among U.S. Teens. Child Trends Research Brief. Publication #2006-08
Terry-Humen, Elizabeth; Manlove, Jennifer; Cottingham, Sarah
This Research Brief draws on recently released nationally representative data to provide information on teenage sexual activity. In this brief, the authors provide trends through 2002 on multiple indicators of sexual experience and activity for males and females, members of racial and ethnic groups, and for younger and older teenagers. These new analyses indicate declines in sexual experience among many subpopulations. However, the authors also identify subgroups of teenagers who engage in oral sex and have multiple sexual partners, placing them at a greater risk of unintended pregnancy and childbearing or of contracting a sexually transmitted infection.
