Small-Group Reading Instruction: A Differentiated Teaching Model for Intermediate Readers, Grades 3-8
Tyner, Beverly; Green, Sharon E.
International Reading Association (NJ3)
Teachers at the intermediate level can now take advantage of the small-group differentiated reading model introduced to the early learning community in Beverly Tyner's bestseller of 2004. This classroom-tested, research-based model supports reading, writing, and spelling as integrated processes. Differentiated instruction can help the reader meet the needs of upper elementary and middle school students as they develop as readers. Here the reader will find: Step-by-step lesson plans on fluency, word study, and comprehension; Classroom dialogue and student work samples; Information on managing and assessing small groups; Assessment materials; Word study materials; and Reproducibles. To enhance the readers use of the small-group model, supplementary word study cards can be downloaded. A companion video series is also available. This book contains the following chapters: (1) Intermediate Reading Instruction and the Small-Group Differentiated Reading Model; (2) Components of and Activities for the Small-Group Differentiated Reading Model; (3) The Evolving Reader Stage; (4) The Maturing Reader Stage; (5) The Advanced Reader Stage; (6) Assessing Student Performance in the Small-Group Differentiated Reading Model; and (7)Managing Small-Group Instruction in Self-Contained and Departmentalized Classrooms. The following are appended: (1) Assessment Materials; (2) Word Study Materials; and (3) Reproducibles. An index is included.
