The Music and Literacy Connection
Hansen, Dee; Bernstorf, Elaine; Stuber, Gayle M.
MENC: The National Association for Music Education
A practical new text with ideas that can immediately be put to use in the classroom. This book goes beyond a thematic link between reading and music to an examination of those skills that are directly parallel in music learning and text reading. Including instructional examples, it provides specific strategies for music and reading teachers to support each other. It also presents the latest research supporting the links between music and literacy, making it a valuable advocacy resource. After an introduction entitled, Threads of Literacy Fabric: Foundation for "The Music and Literacy Connection," this book is divided into four parts. The first part, Children Are Active Learners, includes the following chapters: (1) How Children Learn through Musical Play; and (2) The Role of Music in Play and Literacy Learning. The second part of the book, Music Teachers Are Literacy Teachers and General Classroom Teachers Are Music Teachers, includes: (3) Music in the Reading Environment: Decoding; (4) Reading in the Music Environment: Decoding; (5) Music in the Reading Environment: Comprehension; (6) Reading in the Music Environment: Comprehension; and (7) Considerations, Adaptations, and Enhancements. The fourth part of the book, Children Construct Their Own Knowledge, contains: (8) Listening, Viewing, and Speaking: Building Blocks for Language and Literacy; and (9) Writing in the Music Classroom. Finally, the last part of the book entitled, Literacy Is Not Measured by a Single Output, contains the concluding chapter: (10) Assessing Music Literacy Skills. Also included are: Authentic Exercises; and Student Work.
